Prices

Fuel

At the moment the fuel prices per litre are NZ$2 for petrol and NZ$1,74 for diesel. In New Zealand a diesel tax is charged which is either included in your vehicle rate or they charge it with the return of the vehicle (depending on the rental company). For example: Britz charged NZ$3,20 per 100 kilometres.

Campsites

A powered site for a campervan and 2 adults costs around NZ$15-30 per night, depending on location and facilities. The by far most expensive campground of our trip was the Top 10 Holiday Park in Christchurch at NZ$36 per night (close to the airport). There is usually no extra fee for using the showers. Washing coins are extra for NZ$1-2 per laundry. Read more about New Zealand campgrounds go

Food

The prices are varying and depend on where you are. It's not only in which supermarket you buy your grocery: even in stores of one and the same company the prices for similar products can vary between some dollars. I guess Pak'n Save has the cheapest offers and it's ok for the basic needs. Nevertheless we preferred to buy the fresh food (fruit, vegetables, meat, fish) at Foodtown or Woolworth – simply because it looked fresher. Generally, dairies are more expensive than supermarkets.

New Zealand offers a wide range of seasonal produced and locally grown products such as fruit, vegetables and fish – delicious and inexpensive.

Fish is for free if you catch it on your own and most of the locals do. Wine from New Zealand is more expensive than wine from Australia, a cappuccino costs around NZ$4. Simply browse through the Foodtown onlineshop to get an impression of offers and prices.

Grocery Receipt

Grocery receipt from our first bulk buying at Foodtown. The total sum of NZ179,50 seems quite much but isn't applicable for a normal grocery, because you need really everything in the beginning: all the basics such as rice, noodles, olive oil, canned food, herbs etc. Over that we bought 2 Tupperware containers Klipit, 2 bottles of wine, a 12 pack Steinlager beer, manuka honey, avocados, fresh fish Tarakihi and sushi.
