I feel better now. Firstly we drive past Christchurch, through a lush green, beautiful landscape. It's how I imagine Scotland. Then we arrive at Banks Peninsula, which has a very special landform, formed by two volcanic eruptions. Accompanied by stunning views, we drive around the natural harbour to Akaroa. The picturesque village with colourful wooden houses, cafes and individual shops has a French charm. A bit touristy, but really cosy. It's the weekend and it's quite busy.

There's only one campground, so choice is easy. It's above the village, with views across the beautiful Akaroa Harbour. It's obvious we are not the only ones who are making their last stop here on the way to Christchurch. The campsite is full but quiet and spacious. Seagulls land on the vehicle tops and hope for food, some ducks try their luck as well. You reach the main street via the steep walkway. It's almost 300 metres but not wheelchair accessible.

We walk to the harbour and enquire about a harbour cruise with Akaroa Dolphins. If we'd like to go we should just give them a call tomorrow morning. Afterwards, we have a pint at the bar of the Madeira Hotel on Rue Lavaud. There is horse racing on the screens and the guests – mainly local male – make their bets. Later in the evening more guests come in and the young cover band Lucre plays live music.
