Relaxed from Duesseldorf to Dubai

We booked the flight and the campervan at the beginning of the year, because this year we didn't just want to talk about travelling to New Zealand, but to finally do it. We celebrated the booking with a glass of champagne, but the travel still seemed so far away at the time, it was intangible. The hot summer passed easily and we enjoyed the Soccer World Cup in the garden with friends. But suddenly it's autumn and time to take off to New Zealand :-)

We've packed and unpacked our trekking packs several times and are pretty sure now we have the right things with us for our first trip in a campervan. With 20 kg + 7 kg hand luggage per person, Emirates allows to take more luggage than we need. At 9.05 pm we board the plane at Duesseldorf International Airport, just 45 min. from home. From there it takes us in 6 h 15 min., nonstop to ...

Sleepless in Singapore

... Dubai International Airport, which is enormous and busy. It's a shopping temple. With the time difference it's 5.35 am by now. We're already pretty done in, because we've been awake since yesterday morning. Nevertheless, we go for a stroll and a look around – we have 3 hours in transit. Fortunately, we don't have to look after the luggage, it's been checked the whole way through. Upstairs in front of the gates, travellers are sitting on the floor as there are not enough seats. Some are lying down asleep, waiting, exhausted. We sit down with them and wait for our next take off. It should be said that the flights are displayed on the departure board only a very short time before you have to check in.

Emirates Boeing 777-300 Emirates Boeing 777-300 at hazy Dubai International Airport

This time we are on a Boeing 777-300. Many passengers who are travelling from London to Australia or New Zealand got on the plane in Dubai. We have a nice talk with a Scotsman who is looking forward to meet a friend in New Zealand, whom he hasn't seen for 20 years – and with some other people. The food Emirates serves is tasty – they have curries, lamb and poultry, salads and fruit. Beverages are free and they will serve wine with dinner if you wish. There is a screen for movies, music and games on the back of every headrest. Also, the safety instructions and the neverending Emirates trailer (which you can't switch off so we know by heart now) are shown there after every take off. In the morning they hand out little warm, moist towels to refresh yourself :-) The flight attendants are thoughtful and nice. We're flying into the sunset and are still not able to sleep. Some passengers can and we admire them. After an additional 6,5 hr flight we have a one hour stop in Singapore where it's already night again.
